Model Essay Task 2: Agree/DisagreeIELTS Medical
In today’s Writing Workshop by Luisa, our medics tackled an agree/disagree Task 2 essay. The following model essay was produced:
Creative artists should always be given the freedom to express their own ideas (in words, pictures, music or film) in whichever way they wish. There should be no government restrictions on what they do.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
These days, artists make a living that is dependent on their ability to express their creativity. Whilst I agree that creative artists should be able to express their ideas freely, I do not think that this freedom should be left unchecked. This essay will debate the issue using a recent global example to support arguments and demonstrate points.
Creative artists earn a wage or salary from the industries that employ them to produce original content. In order to do so, they must be given the freedom to allow their imagination to inform their work. In my experience, the majority of creators are able to produce content that is acceptable to the majority of their society – and by extension their government. When that is the case, the artist should be given the opportunity to earn a living without institutional interference.
However, this does not mean that they should be left unchecked. Not every content creator holds views and opinions that are considered acceptable by the majority. For example, Charlie Hedbo is a French publication that is notorious for producing inflammatory content. Its cartoonists’ decision to publish an image mocking an Islamic prophet was stated as the reason for the 2015 massacre at the magazine’s head office. Had the French government been able to impose limits on the illustrators, it is possible that the aforementioned incident would not have happened. Whilst the example is an extreme one, it nevertheless shows why artists cannot be allowed to hide behind a loose interpretation of their right to free speech.
In conclusion, creative artists should be allowed the freedom to create their version of artistic content. There should, however, be limits imposed by the government dependent on societal norms. Hopefully, in future, artists can be trusted to express their opinions without causing offence to the majority of the society to which they belong.
