Nurses who want to work in the UK are required to pass the Academic IELTS examinations before applying to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Academic IELTS is even required from international applicants who come to the UK from an English-speaking country (e.g., South Africa, New Zealand, etc.). Currently, the nurses from the EU and UK do not need to take an Academic IELTS test; however, due to a change in application procedure from early 2016, nurses will be required to demonstrate their ability to communicate safely and effectively in English.

The requirements

The requirements for nurses are 7.0 IELTS score in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking tasks and the minimum overall score is 7.0. Applications from nurses who score below 7.0 will not be considered by the NMC. General Training IELTS test will not be accepted – the nurses must pass Academic IELTS test. It is important to remember that IELTS scores are valid only for two years, therefore, if you took the IELTS exam and obtained the required scores earlier than in 2015, it is likely that you will be required to retake the exam. However, exceptions can be made if a nurse can prove his/her English skills to the NMC.
